Recently, at the 10th Asia-Pacific AppliedAlgaeInternational ConferenceHaematococcus pluvialisAt the International Academic Forum on Application Innovation, Professor Yuan Wenqiao fromThe United StatesNorth Carolina StateUniversityDepartment of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, gave a presentation on the selection of Haematococcus pluvialis strains andAstaxanthinBiologicalExtractionTechnology progress.
In recent years, the economic value of microalgae has been increasingly applied in many fields such as health products, medicine, pigments, feed, and bioenergy, and the scale of the microalgae market has gradually expanded. "According to professional institutions, the market size of the microalgae industry is expected to reach US\$3.68 billion by 2021 and US\$5.17 billion by 2023, and the global microalgae market will continue to maintain a high-speed growth trend." Yuan Wenqiao said.
In the report, Yuan Wenqiao pointed out that: "Microalgae have many health benefits for the human body, such as Chlorella and Spirulina can be used in nutritional health foods; Haematococcus pluvialis extracts astaxanthin, which can be used in nutritional cosmetics and anti-aging products; DHA nutritional elements can also be extracted from certain microalgae. Among them, astaxanthin extracted from Haematococcus pluvialis, due to its super antioxidant capacity, is a promising and valuable biological product with the fastest market growth and is unsaturated."
In the presentation, Yuan Wenqiao also specifically introduced the response of Haematococcus pluvialis under different growth environmental pressures such as nutrient deprivation, salt stress, high light, and low temperature. He pointed out that light is the most important factor inducing the accumulation of a large amount of astaxanthin in Haematococcus pluvialis, and the synthesis of astaxanthin will be further promoted under high-intensity light. In addition, he also shared with the guests many research achievements, including Haematococcus pluvialis collection technology (disk stack centrifuge combined with gravity sedimentation technology) and astaxanthin extraction process (ionic liquid extraction, supercritical carbon dioxide extraction).
"Currently, the biggest obstacle to the industrial development of Haematococcus pluvialis is the cultivation technology of Haematococcus pluvialis and the biological extraction technology of astaxanthin. In recent years, both domestic and foreign countries have invested a lot of manpower and material resources in Haematococcus pluvialis astaxanthin, and the prospects of the astaxanthin industry are becoming increasingly clear, but there are still common problems such as high cost and low yield. With the progress and implementation of algal strain breeding, cultivation technology, and astaxanthin extraction technology, the current problem of insufficient production capacity will be greatly alleviated." Yuan Wenqiao said。
